On Thursday the 22nd of August we had our first local trip as a nursery.
We took the children to the local library and also the local museum in Kingston. This was a short walk where the children enjoyed exploring their local surroundings. They were able to relate back to places that they had visited with their parents and communicate with their teachers and friends about the experiences that they have had.
The comments that came from the children were amazing (“This is the most exciting thing ever!” “I’ve never been to the library before” “The newseum was my favourite part”). Considering it is something that most of the children have embarked on before, they really seemed to enjoy it.
Once arriving at the library the children were able to pick a book and sit down and read independently or be read to by their teacher. They understood that they had to be quiet in the library and learnt to respect others space. The children then got to pick their favourite book and take it back to nursery. They had an understanding that they had to take great care of their books at nursery until they are returned back to the library where they can exchange their book for another.
After the library we then headed next door to the local museum. The children were amazed by the artefacts and really enjoyed looking at the historical objects. They asked lots of questions and took lots of interest whilst walking around the different rooms.
We then headed back to the nursery where again the children were learning their road safety skills and getting to put them into practice.
I could say our first local trip out was a success, and we look forward to exploring the local area a lot more.
As the manager of Monkey Puzzle Kingston I do feel it is important to implement life skills and understanding of the work into our curriculum. It is the best way to learn by navigating your way through a situation. The children learn to problem solve and are the masters of exploration and investigation, showing curiosity about their environment. These skills are an important factor in learning about themselves and the world in which they live.
